 They've hardly ever had free will or the ability to change their rulers, except through massive upheavals like the Revolution and the fall of the Iron Curtain. That's why simple messages like kicking their teams out of sport are actually more powerful than some soldiers fighting in an area they are unlikely to visit. Most ordinary Russians will simply resign themselves to more suffering , which is what they have done for decades. In war the Politicians give ammunition, the Rich give the food and the Poor give their children… When the war is over the Politicians get back the leftover ammunition, the Rich grow more food and the Poor search for the graves of their children.
