Previously, these materials were seen by only the few people who could come to the Library in Washington In addition, the Illinois Historic Preservation Society will announce the release of the "Lincoln Legal Papers DVD Edition." The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency will present to the Library the "Lincoln Legal Papers DVD Edition," a collection of more than 100,000 records associated with Abraham Lincoln's legal career from 1836 to 1861. The DVD will complement the Lincoln materials in the Library of Congress, many of which are available on-line in a Web presentation called "Mr. Lincoln's Virtual Library."

  They have done a thorough and thoughtful job, and have given us ambitious recommendations that will serve as a useful guide as we develop further our electronic services to the Congress and the nation. Their report points up some areas that need immediate strengthening, such as more flexible hiring and compensation procedures, a more robust technological backbone and more partnerships with private enterprise and our information counterparts both here and abroad. We are energized by their observations about how we can best mobilize our resources for the future. The latest Web site from the Library is aimed at kids and families.Michael Greene, President/CEO of the Recording Academy, has announced a grant of $40,000 to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to support audio and video preservation. The grant will be applied toward "Save Our Sounds," a project to preserve historic recordings housed at the American Folklife Center and the Smithsonian Institution. Last year, "Save Our Sounds" was awarded a $750,000 grant from the White House Millennium Council, in partnership with the National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.   The visit, funded by the Open Society Institute in Moscow, is the first phase of a cooperative reading promotion project of the Open Society Institute, the Open Society Institute's Pushkin Library Megaproject, and the Center for the Book. The Pushkin Library Megaproject strengthens library collections and libraries primarily in Russia, but also in other countries. The reading promotion project's goals are to share information about effective reading promotion projects and campaigns and to promote a better understanding of the role and importance of reading and libraries in society. The project has been developed in cooperation with the Reading Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), which is chaired by John Y. Cole, director of the Center for the Book.   The Library of Congress Chorale presents a noontime concert in the Jefferson Building's Coolidge Auditorium in memory of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.  Billington lauded recent landmark developments in the film preservation field, including the continuing development of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Va., which is being built with generous support from the Packard Humanities Institute, and will open in 2005 as possibly the world's pre-eminent audio-visual preservation and research facility; and the Moving Image Collections (MIC), a joint project of the Library of Congress, Association of Moving Image Archivists, Rutgers University, Georgia Tech, University of Washington and numerous other institutions. Seventeen maps are reproduced from the private collection of Washington philanthropist and Library of Congress Madison Council member Albert H. Small, and others come from institutions and collections in France and the United States. Nine of the map descriptions are in the form of essays by contributing authors Timothy Davis, Herbert M.
