His father was a soldier who survived the Bataan death march during World War II—in which American and Filipino prisoners of war were abused following the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. At the age of 11, Taguba moved with his family to Hawaii, where he later graduated from high school. Upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in history from Idaho State University in 1972, he was commissioned as an Armor officer, and served in the 1st Batallion, 72nd Armor, 2nd Infantry Division, 8th U.S. Army in Korea. Taguba came to national attention in 2004 when he wrote the investigative report about abuses of Iraqis at the Abu Ghraib prison at the hands of American soldiers.
