  The Library’s Asian Division and Prints and Photographs Division will present “A Tour of the Lost Kingdom: Sikkim” at the Library of Congress at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, in Room LJ-119 of the Thomas Jefferson Building, located at 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C. The event is free and open to the public, but preregistration is required due to limited space; This 90-minute program will feature a photographic presentation with comments by two special speakers: Her Majesty Hope Cooke, former Queen of Sikkim, and photographer Alice Kandell. Behind these photographs is a fascinating story to be told by the two speakers whose lives have been forever tied to this kingdom.

  I was crying and in a distressed state, and a gentleman on the way that I saw approached me to check I was ok and said he would walk me home. I felt like I couldn’t say no, and luckily for my sake he was one of the good ones and actually did walk me to my door and then leave without hurting me. Looking back, that could have so easily ended up differently. In hindsight I wasn’t in the right frame of mine to be going out and partying because that’s something I would never do now. I just feel so much for the women who have no choice but to walk places alone frequently, because it must be so draining on a regular basis.  Morton, a forest carbon expert, will speak about NASA’s satellite data and climate models, which have projected drier conditions that will likely cause increased fire activity across the United States in coming decades, with an increase in frequency of extreme events.
