 Washington, D.C. This Books & Beyond event is co-sponsored by the Library’s Center for the Book and its Publishing Office. It is free and open to the public; no tickets are required. The book tells the story of the Lewis and and Clark expedition in a new way: through the maps the explorers used and made. The maps present a mix of new information about the nation. Ralph E. Ehrenberg, chief of the Library’s Geography and Map Division, and his co-author, Smithsonian Institution curator emeritus Herman J. Viola, retrace the expedition with more than 100 images reproduced in exquisite detail. The Library of Congress, the nation's first-established federal cultural institution and the largest library in the world, holds more than 160 million items in various languages, disciplines and formats.

  I was crying and in a distressed state, and a gentleman on the way that I saw approached me to check I was ok and said he would walk me home. I felt like I couldn’t say no, and luckily for my sake he was one of the good ones and actually did walk me to my door and then leave without hurting me. Looking back, that could have so easily ended up differently. In hindsight I wasn’t in the right frame of mine to be going out and partying because that’s something I would never do now. I just feel so much for the women who have no choice but to walk places alone frequently, because it must be so draining on a regular basis.  Morton, a forest carbon expert, will speak about NASA’s satellite data and climate models, which have projected drier conditions that will likely cause increased fire activity across the United States in coming decades, with an increase in frequency of extreme events. At 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, Gerald Guala, director of the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (IT IS) at the U.S. Geological Survey, will present “Big Data and the Linkage of Federal Data Resources for Biodiversity Science.” At 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, Matthew Rodell, chief of Hydrologic Sciences at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, will present “Measuring Our Underground Water Supplies from Space.” Rodell’s research focuses on the measurement and modeling of terrestrial water storage derived from ground and space-based observations.
